The Business Renegade Lifestyle Strategy

by Mark Salmon on 05/07/2010

A change of lifestyle strategy. After 20 years in the same house, today we are moving from Nuneaton, some 25 miles south to Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon.

This is a very costly exercise – Stamp Duty is a substantial tax that effectively reduces the flexibility that we all have to re-locate to other areas.

I ‘m not moving to find work – I can work from any location as an internet marketing consultant.  But if I was moving to find work, stamp duty would make me think more than twice about such a move.

My move is a strategic one.

Firstly, I am moving to be closer to the rest of my family. Perhaps the best lifestyle strategy of all.

I will also be located within easy walking distance of the town centre to counter rising petrol costs (- although these are limited anyway as I do not commute to work or visit customers.)  Also, we will have easy access to all the town centre amenities including restaurants, the theatre, golf club, health club and leisure complex.

The beautiful River Avon is within 5 minutes walk too.

My new garden is huge, giving me the ability to grow my own vegetables in the event that the dollar and sterling hit troubles in the years ahead – as I expect these currencies to do given the huge debts our countries have amassed.

I have very little confidence that our politicians will have the guts to make the necessary cuts in public sector spending stick.  I believe that the level of unrest and strikes that will arise will make them water-down their measures, forcing them to start the money printing presses up again.

My investments will be significantly weighted in gold and silver as I anticipate more investors will invest in these commodities to counter inflation and the gradual and continual devaluation of our currencies.  Hopefully, this strategic move will at least preserve a portion of my wealth.

My skill base is now firmly rooted in the internet – I anticipate that there will be huge opportunities ahead as the internet developes further, particularly for business.  I have positioned myself to take advantage of these opportunities.

Ultimately this is the only security I have – the ability to generate an income from anywhere in the world with very little capital investment.  That opportunity is available to anyone with the right skillset.

Stratford-upon-Avon is a highly popular place to live, so house price reductions (which I anticipate will happen soon as the austerity budget takes hold) will not bite as severely as some other areas.  Also, the house is in need of improvement and that has enabled me to buy it at a discount.

A Tesco Express is opening up within 50 yards of my new house – not bad for my local corner shop.

We have too much ‘STUFF’!

Packing our house to move has made me realise that we have far too much stuff.

In fact it is a huge burden and costly to maintain, insure, move and store.  I am sure that the amount of stuff we have is weighing heavily on our life, gathering dust and taking up space.  I am resolved to sell or ditch about 50% of our belongings to lighten the load.

My wife has kept all the childrens toys and books.  I have 30 boxes of books, 5 containers of clothes and yet I only ever wear the contents of one – the rest are just there.

I have 3 sets of general purpose tools and yet DIY is not really my forte.  I have enough flower pots to open a garden centre.  We have 3 computers, one being out-of-date and slow.  I have 4 sofas where two would be plenty, two sets of dining tables and chairs, two sideboards, two music systems, 3 televisions and so the list goes on.

We have been keeping the economy flowing, just like many other people have done, but the excess is sickening to me.   I reckon that we need our own austerity budget – keep the best and ditch the rest – preferably on Ebay.

The expansion of numerous storage facilities to store excess stuff is ludicrous and symptomatic of a deep sickness in our society, particularly given the level of poverty elsewhere in the world.  In my opinion, a re-balancing of the global economy is long over-due.

I shall definitely be concentrating my lifestyle strategy on quality not quantity in future and trying to live a more simple life.  After all, they do say that the best things in life are free.
