One of the aspects of my consultancy is that I operate a bookkeeping service for small businesses. I believe that I can quickly empower a non-financial business owner or manager to keep a high quality set of books that produces critical management information about how their business is performing.
That brings me to Bill’s desire to learn bookkeeping. Bill’s wife owns a local florists shop. She opened it recently and is a talented florist that has quickly established a viable business.
Bill on the other hand is an engineer by training with no bookkeeping knowledge and a limited knowledge of computers. Bill has been my greatest challenge to date.
Bill has recently retired and I like him a great deal. However, Bill does things his own way…
I gave Bill a bookkeeping training DVD to watch that takes the trainee bookkeeper through a simple set of exercises to acclimatise them to my bookkeeping software. Instead of completing the training Bill tried to figure out the programme on his own. (Head in hands!)
What should take 90 minutes to learn, has taken around 4 months to get right but we are just about over the hump now. Bill produced last month’s accounts and there was one small error which we quickly rectified.
Now bear in mind that his wife has been successful and the average transaction value is low. In a month that adds up to an awesome number of bookkeeping entries.
Bill is now producing profit and loss accounts and telling his wife how she is doing and he has confidence in his figures because they are fully reconciled to her bank statements. If Bill can do bookkeeping, I reckon anyone can with a little bit of support.
On occasions even giving that support has been problematical.
Remember that I told you that Bill’s computer skills were somewhat limited – I struggled to get him online and using my desktop sharing programme. This enables me to look at what is going on on his desktop so that we could sort out his bookkeeping problems. However, even that has been mastered now and Bill is flying.
Bill and his wife will save a wad of fees from their accountant at the year end when they present the books in apple-pie order.
If there are any other Bill’s or Billie-Jo’s out there that desire to learn bookkeeping, my simple software is wonderful for most small businesses with turnover up to £1m. Contact me and I will give you a quick demo of the software or send you a demo disk to play with.
