Business Development: What Does Success Mean To You?

by Mark Salmon on 23/09/2009

This article will discuss some of the key areas that bring success into our lives.

Success means different things to each of us and it is important to understand that we are each responsible for our own happiness i.e. nobody else can give it to us.

Here are my benchmarks for evaluating success:

  1. The first criteria for enjoying success is that you are happy and that you have peace of mind.  This might include having complete freedom and independance.  Freedom from worry and stress.
  2. Having excellent health is a major criteria for success – if you suffer from poor health, it is difficult to enjoy other aspects of your life.  By ‘health’ I mean having a positive mental attitude, eating a good diet and exercise.  All of these areas have spawned huge industries because they contribute to our well-being.
  3. Having the support of loving relationships is also crucial i.e. close family and friends, who we can turn to in our ‘hour of need’ or can simply enjoy social interaction with.  We often take our friends and family for granted but it can pay huge dividends if we nurture our relationships.
  4. Having adequate finance for our needs.  Often the amount of money we have equates to the quality and quantity of what we do for other people.  The word ‘adequate’ is the key and this is defined by each of us – it is possible for some very wealthy people to feel impoverished and those with nothing to feel unburdened and sufficient.
  5. Setting ourselves worthy goals is an important element of success.  Goals can be set for personal/family, business/career, and personal development.  It is well known that those with clear goals are much more successful than those with none.  Easy to do but also easy not to do.
  6. Self knowledge is a key element of success.  Knowing what you want but also being thankful for what you already have.  Meditation and hypnosis are therapies that can help you in this area.
  7. Having a sense of self-fulfilment is a key ingredient for personal success.  Feeling that we have contributed in some way to help others, or have created a legacy that will be admired or remembered, is important to most people.

These are my criteria for evaluating success.  It is not possible to be truly successful unless we can tick all of the boxes but, as I said before, your feelings of success are defined by you rather than other people, who will have different criteria for evaluating what ‘success’ means.

Why do I  include this article in my blog?  To remind you that being a success in business is not enough – you also have to pay attention to the other areas in your life.  It seems pointless to create a fantastic business if your health is impaired, or relationships with loved-ones are damaged, in the process.

How do you measure up in each of these areas?
